Seasonal Recurrences

Christmas season dictates the return of certain classics every year, and Washington, D.C. gives you lots of different choices for enjoying them.

For example, you can choose among at least four different productions of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol this weekend. There’s a musical one at MetroStage Thursday through Saturday at 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m., and Sunday at 7 p.m. Tickets are $50. There’s a commedia dell’arte version at Gallaudet University put on by Faction of Fools Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets for that one are $25 for adults, $10 for kids 12 and under, $15 for military, seniors, and students. There’s a comic version by Chris Davis at the Greenbelt Arts Center Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $17 for adults, $14 for students, military, and seniors. And there’s a walking tour version by Historic Strolls that meanders through downtown Washington on Saturday and Sunday at noon. Tickets are $12 for adults, $6 for kids under 16.

This is also the season for choral recitals: The Washington Choral Society performs at the Kennedy Center at 1 and 4 p.m. on Saturday (tickets $18 to $70), while the National Symphony Orchestra performs Handel’s Messiah there Thursday at 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m. (tickets $10 to $85). On Sunday the Handel performances wrap up with one of Washington, D.C.’s most popular events, as the public is invited to sing along to the Messiah for free. Tickets will be distributed in the Hall of Nations beginning at 6 p.m., one per person.
